In her first poetry chapbook, Barbara McKendry explores the enigmas and paradoxes of life, and the connecting threads of light and shadow that interweave our individual lives, the natural world, and the whole of humanity.

Light & Shadow explores the wonders of the everyday—from the inscrutable glass of a Currawong’s eye to Margaret Olley’s riotous flannel flowers—but also hints at the big questions, at the deeper meanings suggested by arthritic trees, and ladders laying slant, meanings that hover on the margins of our awareness.

Light & Shadow embodies Barbara’s passion for the natural environment and her concerns about our relationship with it. But it also speaks to the power of extraordinary art to enrich our ordinary lives.

Barbara lives and writes on Gundungurra Country, never ceded, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Since joining the local branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers, she has been inspired, and had the good fortune to be encouraged, to engage more deeply with poetry.

Barbara is a keen bushwalker.  She practises yoga, and also enjoys knitting & crochet.
